Abstract
The authors made a study on the epidemiological aspects of the epidemics which had occurred in Pusan and Kyungnam province over a period of 2 months in autumn 1969 and 3 months in summer-autumn 1970. The first bacteriological. examination of the rectal swabs was undertaken immediately after admission to the isolation ward. Rectal swabs were taken daily throughout the duration of confinement. The patients were discharged after three consecutive negative bacteriological examinations. And the following results were obtained.
1. All the strains isolated were V. cholera El Tor, type Ogawa, except fornegative hemolysis on sheep blood cells in tubes, but agglutinated in chickenerythrocytes. They all gave positive Voges-Proskauer and Indol tests.
2. In 1969, out of a total of 101 cases of clinically suspected diarrheal patients, stool. cultures were positive for V. cholera in 66 (=65..34%) and 101 cases of attendants, stool cultures were positive for cholera carriers in 55 (=4.95%). In 1970; out of a total of 625 cases of clinically suspected diarrheal patients, showed a positive result for V. cholera only in 310 (=49.60%) and 62, cases of attendants, stool cultures were ¢¥ positive for cholera carriers in 22(=2.52%) respectively. Five patients (=7.57% in 1969). and 6 patients (=1.94% in 1970) died due to the disease, nine of these on the first day-of hospitalization. Among these deaths, there were 3 children, and 8 adults (4 patients were over 60 years old).
3. Duration of positive bacteriological findings in the rectal swabs found in 1-day (31.5%), and the longest one was in 21-day (=0.3%) after admission to the isolation ward.
4. Throughout the age groups, the forties were the. high rate with 27.3% in 1969, and the twenties were the high rate with 20.63% in 1970. Both sexes were equal in rate in 1969, and some higher rates were observed in female than male in 1970.
5. The high late of distribution of patients was at Sue-ku district and low rate was at Jung-ku district in Pusan. It was suggested that the lower socioeconomic groups with poor standards of sanitary facilities were frequently attacked by these water and food-borne diseases.
6. V. cholera El Tor were isolated from cots, bedpans, corridor floors, door knobs of lavatory, and flies in the isolation ward. (It was a condition resulting from arbitrary non-disinfections of the isolation ward for a period of 12hours).
